The Problem With “Hard” Workouts

Social media is full of workouts designed to destroy you. Puke-worthy conditioning pieces. Max-out sessions every day. Training until you literally can’t move.

Here’s the thing: that’s not training. That’s punishment.

At CrossFit MYO, we believe training should make you better — not just tired. Every workout we program has a specific intent, a target stimulus, and a place in a larger training cycle.

What “Periodized” Actually Means

Periodization is the strategic organization of training over time. Instead of doing random workouts and hoping for the best, we structure training into phases:

  • Accumulation — Building volume and work capacity
  • Intensification — Increasing weight and intensity
  • Realization — Testing and applying your fitness
  • Deload — Planned recovery to prevent burnout

This isn’t guesswork. It’s exercise science applied to group training.

Every Rep Has a Reason

When you see “5x3 Back Squat @ 80%” on the whiteboard, that’s not arbitrary. That specific set and rep scheme is targeting maximal strength without accumulating excessive fatigue. It fits into a week that’s balanced across pushing, pulling, squatting, hinging, and conditioning.

When you see a 12-minute AMRAP, it’s programmed to develop your aerobic capacity and muscular endurance. The movements are selected to complement — not compete with — the strength work earlier in the week.

How This Is Different From Other Boxes

Many CrossFit gyms pull workouts from the internet or program on the fly. There’s nothing inherently wrong with variety, but without structure, you get:

  • Overuse injuries from hitting the same patterns too frequently
  • Plateaus from never progressively overloading
  • Burnout from constantly redlining

At CrossFit MYO, Blane Diamond designs every training cycle with 18+ years of experience and a Kinesiology degree. The programming is the product.

What This Means For You

You don’t need to understand periodization to benefit from it. Just show up, do the work, and trust the process. We handle the science. You handle the effort.

That’s the deal.
