What Makes This Session Effective

Four sets of five at seventy-five to eighty percent hits the sweet spot for strength endurance. You’ll move well and recover fast. The barbell prep primes your snatch pattern, but the real work lives in the front squat. Stay tight on the descent and drive up with intent.

Movement Glossary

Front Squat: The front squat places the barbell across the front delts and shoulders with elbows high, forcing an upright torso and massive quad demand. You unrack the bar, step back, brace hard, and descend until hips drop below parallel before driving up. Keep your elbows pointing forward throughout the entire rep to maintain position and protect your wrists.

FAQs

Q: How should I pace the four sets of front squats?

A: Treat the first set as a gauge. It should feel challenging but smooth. If bar speed drops sharply on set two, drop the load five percent. You want all four sets to look nearly identical.

Q: What if my elbows drop during the front squat?

A: Elbow drop shifts load to your lower back and kills quad engagement. Reset between reps, take a full breath, and actively push your elbows toward the ceiling before you descend. If mobility limits you, use a cross-arm grip or straps.

Q: Should I wear weightlifting shoes for this session?

A: Yes. The elevated heel improves ankle range and lets you stay more upright, which is the entire point of front squatting. If you don’t have them, squat in flat shoes and prioritize torso position over depth.

Q: How does the barbell prep help the front squat?

A: The muscle snatches and overhead squats wake up your upper back, shoulders, and core, the exact stabilizers that keep the front rack solid under load. Skip the prep and your first working set will feel heavier than it should.
