The Workout
DT
Five rounds of: •155/105 pound Deadlift, 12 reps •155/105 pound Hang power clean, 9 reps •155/105 pound Push jerk, 6 reps
What Makes This Workout Effective
“DT” is one of CrossFit’s Hero WODs. It honors U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Timothy P. Davis, 28, of the 23rd Special Tactics Squadron, who was killed on February 20, 2009, when his vehicle was struck by an improvised explosive device while supporting Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan. He is survived by his wife and his son.
Today’s five rounds use one load for all three lifts: 12 deadlifts, 9 hang power cleans and 6 push jerks at 155/105 lb. That makes the push jerks the heaviest lift relative to your strength, and your grip decides how long the deadlifts and cleans stay unbroken. Keep your back flat on every deadlift, even in round five, and take a moment before you start to remember who this workout is for.

FAQ
Q: Should I go unbroken on the deadlifts?
A: In round one, maybe. By round three many people’s grip and back are better served by splitting the 12, like 6 and 6, with a short reset in between. A fast set with a rounded back costs you the rest of the workout, and a quick planned break doesn’t.
Q: How do I keep the push jerks from slowing me down?
A: Rest with the bar on the floor before you clean it, not in the front rack after. Then do the 9 hang power cleans, stand tall, take one breath, and start the jerks. If a jerk lands soft or forward, bring the next set down to 3 and 3.
Q: What’s the difference between a push jerk and a push press?
A: Both start with a short dip and drive from the legs. In a push press you finish the bar overhead by pressing with your arms. In a push jerk you drive the bar up and then dip under it again, catching it with locked arms in a partial squat, which lets you move heavier weight with less shoulder fatigue.
